Pet Owner Discovers Cat's Secret Bond With Dog
A unique and heartwarming story has emerged from a farm in Nebraska, where an orange cat named Charlie has captured the attention of people across the internet. The tale began when a video surfaced showing Charlie, a feline known for his outgoing personality, displaying behavior that is typically associated with dogs.
The term "copycat" may not have originated with cats, but it certainly applies to them in some cases. While the phrase dates back to 19th-century Maine as a term used for individuals who imitate others, it turns out that cats are capable of being just as imitative as humans. In fact, a 2021 study published in the journal Animal Cognition revealed that a cat was able to learn and replicate human actions after observing their owner perform them. Over 16 trials, the cat successfully replicated these actions more than 80% of the time, showcasing both intelligence and a strong bond with its human companion.
At Griebel Farms, a fifth-generation family-run operation in Nebraska, Charlie has become a social media sensation—not because of typical cat behavior, but because he has started acting like a dog. According to Andi Griebel, a member of the family that runs the farm, Charlie joined the farm this winter and quickly became a beloved member of the team. “He’s very outgoing,” she said, describing him as a new addition to the farm crew.
Charlie's outgoing nature has led to a special friendship with Basil, an English Labrador retriever. “Basil is very friendly with all of the farm cats,” Griebel explained. “It’s just a matter of which cats will be friendly back to her.” However, it wasn’t until recently that Griebel realized just how deep the connection between Charlie and Basil had become.
One day, while walking around the farm, Griebel noticed something unusual: Charlie was wagging his tail like a dog. “We noticed Charlie wagging his tail probably once it got nice out, and he was able to run around more with Basil,” she said. Intrigued by the sight, she filmed the moment and uploaded it to the Griebel Farms TikTok account. The caption read, “The shop cat has spent a little bit too much time with the farm dog.”
The video quickly went viral, amassing over 1.6 million views and thousands of comments from viewers who found the footage amusing. One user wrote, “He picked up the doggo's dialect,” while another commented, “He's wagging in caps lock.” The clip highlighted how far Charlie had come in mimicking Basil's behavior, making it clear that their bond had grown stronger over time.
This isn’t the first time a cat has gone viral for imitating a dog. There have been numerous instances of felines barking like canines or wagging their tails in a way that resembles a dog’s behavior. In one particularly memorable case, a cat even took on the role of a guard dog for its owner’s children.
